This 40’x47′ Craftsman-style 2-story house in South Bend, Indiana, was owned for nearly a century by a local family who ran a confectionery shop and restaurant. After the house passed out of the family several years ago, the corner lot it sat on sold for development. The developers donated the house to Indiana Landmarks, who hired Wolfe House Movers, LLC, to relocate it to another lot a couple of blocks up the street. Wolfe installed steel and dollies under the house and used the Buckingham SmartSteer® System to drive it through the street to the new location, pausing en route for the power company to lift utility lines while the house passed under them. At the new location, Wolfe drove the house over steel beam supported by crib piles, aligning the house with the new foundation walls. Indiana Landmarks plans to finish rehabilitating the house and sell it for continued use as a personal residence.
